Native from China, Magnolia officinalis is traditionally known as houpu and has been used medicinally for over 2000 years to treat various types of diseases. Recent scientific studies link its benefits, in controlling anxiety, to the cortisol hormone. It is also recommended in cases of obesity, diabetes, osteoporosis, and memory difficulties. Honokiol and magnolol are the main constituents identified in the bark of Magnolia officinalis and have been used in traditional Chinese medicine to treat various mental illnesses, including depression. Magnolol is present between 2 and 10%, while honokiol is present between 1 and 5% in dry extracts of magnolia bark. Its main actions are anti-stress and anxiolytic. Its main active ingredient may be beneficial in preventing the development and progression of Alzheimer’s disease. In vitro study demonstrated antioxidant and neuroprotective properties.
