Red yeast rice, a long tradition in China and Japan, has been used not only as a food supplement, but also as a therapeutic aid to improve blood circulation and digestive function, being recommended for people with high cholesterol levels and at risk of cardiovascular disease.
Its main active ingredients (lovastatin and monacolin K) are contained in rice fermented by Monascus purpureus, a red yeast cultivated on rice.
This rice naturally contains ingredients such as monacolins, the most important of which is monacolin K.
Red rice fermented by Monascus also contains, in addition to monacolins, phytosterols, isoflavones, antioxidants and healthy fats such as unsaturated fatty acids.
Monacolin K, also known as lovastatin, is the active ingredient in HMG-Co A reductase inhibitor medications and, consequently, cholesterol synthesis inhibitors.
This compound reduces cholesterol production in the liver, increasing its metabolism.
Beta-Sitosterol belongs to a group of phytosterols, substances of plant origin that reduce blood cholesterol levels.
Yeast, a natural source of chromium, allows for good absorption of this important trace element. Insufficient chromium levels in the body are linked to problems such as excess weight (increased fat mass), diabetes (glucose intolerance), and increased cholesterol levels.
Thus, Red Yeast Rice Extract helps maintain regular blood cholesterol levels, as well as the health of the vascular system, by increasing the metabolism of fats and carbohydrates.
